Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin (SSLYBY) is an indie pop band that formed in Springfield, Missouri in 1999. Named whimsically after the first Russian president of the post-Soviet era, Boris Yeltsin, the group is known for their melodic, upbeat pop songs, and heartfelt lyrics. The band was originally comprised of lead vocalist and guitarist John Robert Cardwell, singer, guitarist, and drummer Philip Dickey, bassist Tom Hembree, and guitarist Will Knauer. Over the years, the lineup has seen some changes, with Hembree departing and various musicians stepping in to contribute.
The band initially gained attention with their homespun recording style and the release of their debut album "Broom" in 2005, which they recorded in a Springfield attic. This album, along with its supplemental "Broom Bonus Tracks," created a strong fan base and garnered critical acclaim for its charming, lo-fi aesthetic and catchy songwriting. Their subsequent works, including "Pershing" (2008) and "Let It Sway" (2010) have helped solidify their place in the indie rock scene, showing off a growth in production and a refinement in their songwriting. Over the years, SSLYBY have been prolific creators, releasing additional noteworthy albums such as "Tape Club" (2011), a collection of B-sides and rarities, "Fly By Wire" (2013), and their most recent full-length, "The High Country" (2015). With a sound that blends earnest lyrical reflections with infectious guitar riffs and a distinctly DIY ethos, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin has firmly established a lasting presence in indie music circles.
