UMA is a musician born in Catalunya in 1995 to a British mother and Thai father, whose childhood travels in Thailand deeply shaped her artistic perspective. After moving to the UK, she studied music at the University of York, where she formed her first band, Sur. Uma's music explores love, loss, and identity, often told through the lens of others—she describes her lyrics as written “from and for the people I love and the issues I care about.” Blending experimental folk and ambient influences, her sound is warm and personal, drawing comparisons to artists like Josephine Foster, Sibylle Baier, and Karen Dalton. Uma has released singles such as “Silver Tongue” and “Mockingbird,” and she is gearing up to launch her debut EP, continuing to make her mark between Girona and the UK’s music scenes.
With roots in both Catalonia and a multicultural upbringing, Uma’s work reflects a rich tapestry of experiences, constantly evolving as she carves out a distinct place in the world of alternative folk. Her creative process is shaped by collaborations, residencies like “Can Obert,” and an ongoing exploration of what home and belonging mean in a global context.
