Roger Wolfe Kahn was a jazz bandleader, composer, and musician who made a splash in the 1920s and early 1930s. Born into wealth—his father was financier Otto Kahn—Roger used his resources and talent to become one of the youngest and most prominent big band leaders of his time. He led a stylish and sophisticated dance orchestra that featured some of the top musicians of the era, including future legends like Artie Shaw and Jack Teagarden.
Kahn was not only known for his music, but also for his flyboy lifestyle (he later became a test pilot and aircraft designer!). His recordings from 1925 to 1932 reflect the elegance and energy of the Jazz Age, with popular tracks like “Crazy Rhythm” and “A Cup of Coffee, a Sandwich and You.” Though he eventually stepped away from music, Roger Wolfe Kahn left a lasting impression on the early days of American jazz and dance band music.
