Boston is an American rock band from Boston, Massachusetts, that achieved its most notable successes during the 1970s and 1980s. Centered on guitarist, keyboardist, songwriter, and producer Tom Scholz, the band is known for its highly polished and masterfully produced sound, which combined elements of progressive rock with straightforward radio-friendly rock and roll. Boston's self-titled debut album was released in 1976 and shot to success, becoming one of the best-selling debut albums in U.S. history at the time. The album contained the ubiquitous classic rock staples "More Than a Feeling," "Peace of Mind," and "Foreplay/Long Time," which showcased the band's blend of soaring guitar harmonies, lush production, and tight musical precision.
Following the monumental success of their first album, Boston continued to enjoy commercial success with "Don't Look Back" in 1978 and "Third Stage" in 1986, the latter of which featured the hit single "Amanda." However, as the times changed, so did the frequency of their releases. "Walk On," released in 1994, saw the band navigating the grunge era with their classic sound intact, though with less commercial impact. After a lengthy hiatus, Boston came back with "Life, Love & Hope" in 2013, showing the tenacity and enduring quality of their musical identity. Despite the passing of original vocalist Brad Delp in 2007, Boston has continued to tour and released the Christmas single "God Rest Ye Metal Gentlemen" in 2013, which demonstrated the band's ability to evolve while staying true to the melodic rock style that first brought them to the pinnacle of the music scene.
