Luna is an American indie rock band formed in 1991 by singer and guitarist Dean Wareham after the breakup of his previous band, Galaxie 500. Known for their dreamy, guitar-driven sound and literate lyrics, Luna quickly gained a devoted cult following throughout the 1990s. Original members included Wareham, Stanley Demeski (formerly of The Feelies) on drums, and Justin Harwood (formerly of The Chills) on bass. Guitarist Sean Eden joined later, helping to define the band’s lush, melodic sound.
Luna released a string of critically acclaimed albums throughout the ’90s, including Bewitched (1994) and Penthouse (1995), the latter of which is often considered a standout in their discography. After disbanding in 2005, the group reunited in 2015 for select tours and later released new music, including the covers album A Sentimental Education (2017) and the instrumental EP A Place of Greater Safety. With a mix of Velvet Underground-inspired cool and romantic melancholy, Luna remains a beloved name in indie and alternative rock circles.
