Woodenhead is a dynamic fusion band from New Orleans, formed in 1975 by guitarist Jimmy Robinson and fellow students at Loyola College of Music. Their sound is a vibrant mix of rock, progressive rock, New Orleans funk, R&B, jazz fusion, and even Celtic influences, drawing inspiration from artists like The Mahavishnu Orchestra and Allen Holdsworth. Over the decades, Woodenhead has earned a reputation for high-energy instrumental performances that blend complex rhythms and melodies with a visceral, fun live presence.
The band's core lineup—Jimmy Robinson on guitar, Fran Comiskey on keyboards, Paul Clement on bass, and Mark Whitaker on drums—has remained consistent for much of their history. They have opened for legendary acts such as Chick Corea’s Elektric Band, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, and Jeff Beck, showcasing their expertise at major venues and music festivals, including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2025, Woodenhead remains a beloved fixture of New Orleans' rich musical landscape, known for their imaginative, boundary-pushing fusion sound and commitment to musical integrity.
