Mats Edén

Mats Edén is a distinguished Swedish musician, composer, and a dedicated proponent of Nordic folk music, revered for his mastery in playing the fiddle and the accordion. Born on October 30, 1957, in Södertälje, Sweden, Edén grew up immersed in the rich musical traditions of his homeland, primarily the region of Värmland, where he would eventually collect and revitalize a trove of local folk tunes. An original member of the influential folk group Groupa, which he co-founded in the 1980s, Edén has played a significant role in the modern revival and reinvention of Scandinavian folk music by blending elements of jazz and other genres to create an innovative and contemporary folk sound.

Over the years, Mats Edén has amassed a formidable body of work, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with other musicians. His recent releases, such as "Alvaleken," "Milvus," and "Egeland/Edén/Marin Vol. 1" showcase his continual evolution and unyielding commitment to the craft. These albums are notable for their intricate arrangements and Edén's skillful interplay between tradition and innovation. Through his ongoing explorations and teaching—having also served as a senior lecturer at the Norwegian Academy of Music—Edén has cemented his status as a torchbearer in the world of Nordic folk music, influencing a new generation of musicians and preserving the cultural heritage of Scandinavian melodies and rhythms.
