Carburetor Dung

Carburetor Dung is a legendary Malaysian punk rock band that first formed in Kuala Lumpur back in 1991. The group was started by bassist Fendi Mazlan and guitarist Joe Kidd, who named the band after the title of a book by rock critic Lester Bangs. Over the years, Carburetor Dung became known for their energetic and politically charged punk sound, blending elements of hardcore punk with street-punk melodies and more recently even avant-garde jazz influences. They gained a reputation for their raw, fast-paced guitar riffs, pounding drums, and gritty vocals, with lyrics often addressing political issues and personal reflections. Their debut album, *Songs For Friends* (1993), marked the beginning of a prolific career that included mini-albums such as *The Allure of Manure* (1999) and various EPs and splits. The band has evolved in both sound and language, increasingly incorporating Bahasa Malaysia into their songs while maintaining their punk roots and rebellious spirit.

Aside from their music, Carburetor Dung are regarded as veterans of Malaysia’s underground DIY and indie scenes, having influenced generations of punk fans across Southeast Asia. Their songs like “Boo Hoo Clapping Song,” “Song for a Friend,” and “Don’t Know” have become punk anthems in the region. Through their fierce commitment to energetic live performances and socially conscious themes, Carburetor Dung embodies the spirit of punk as a voice for the disenfranchised and a force for change in Malaysian music.
