Pauline Viardot

Pauline Viardot (1821–1910) was a French mezzo-soprano, composer, and influential music teacher. Born into a highly musical family—her father was the famous opera singer Manuel García and her sister was renowned soprano Maria Malibran—Viardot became one of the most celebrated opera singers of the 19th century. She had an impressive vocal range and was known for her dramatic interpretations on stage. Beyond performing, she composed numerous songs, operettas, and piano works, and she played a key role in promoting the music of composers like Chopin and Berlioz. Her salon in Paris became a hub for artistic and intellectual exchange, attracting some of the greatest minds of her time.
