Michael Stipe is an American singer, songwriter, and musician best known as the lead singer of the alternative rock band R.E.M. Born in Decatur, Georgia, in 1960, Stipe co-founded R.E.M. in 1980 with guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry. The band rose to fame in the 1980s with their jangly guitar sound and Stipe's enigmatic lyrics, which often explored themes of love, loss, and spirituality. R.E.M. released a string of critically acclaimed albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including "Murmur" (1983), "Green" (1988), and "Automatic for the People" (1992). Stipe has also pursued a solo career, releasing his debut album, "In the Sun," in 2019.
