The Reds are a killer rock band hailing from Philadelphia, formed back in 1977 by guitarist/vocalist Rick Shaffer and keyboardist Bruce Cohen. Drawing from influences like The Doors and early punk vibes, they carved out a niche with their brooding, atmospheric sound that blended new wave, post-punk, and industrial edges. Their self-titled debut album dropped in 1979 on A&M Records, kicking off a run of releases like Stronger Silence (1981) and Fatal Slide (1982), which showcased their dark, intense style and even landed them spots in film soundtracks, including Michael Mann's Manhunter.
Over the years, The Reds kept evolving, with later albums like Shake Appeal (1984), Cry Tomorrow (1992), and Fugitives from the Laughing House (2007) exploring more experimental territory. Though they never hit massive mainstream fame, they've built a dedicated cult following for their raw energy and cinematic flair, and Shaffer and Cohen have continued collaborating on music for TV and film. If you're into moody rock with a edge, their remastered stuff is a great entry point!
