Schönberg

Arnold Schönberg was a game-changer in the world of classical music. Born in Vienna in 1874, this Austrian composer shook things up with his innovative twelve-tone technique, which basically turned traditional harmony on its head. Schönberg started out composing in a late Romantic style, but he soon pushed the boundaries into atonality and expressionism.

Schönberg wasn't just a composer - he was also a painter, music theorist, and influential teacher. He mentored some other big names in modern classical music, like Alban Berg and Anton Webern. In 1934, he moved to the United States to escape the Nazis, where he taught at universities in California until his death in 1951. While his music was often controversial and misunderstood at first, Schönberg's ideas had a huge impact on 20th-century classical music and continue to influence composers today.
