Siegfried Köhler (1923–2017) was a distinguished German conductor and composer known for his extensive work in opera and classical music. Born in Freiburg im Breisgau, Köhler began his musical career as a harpist and repetiteur before transitioning to conducting. He held key positions at several German opera houses including Düsseldorf, Cologne, Saarbrücken, and Wiesbaden, where he was Generalmusikdirektor and professor of conducting. From 1989, he served as chief conductor at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, expanding his international presence. His repertoire was broad, encompassing composers such as Mozart, Wagner, Richard Strauss, and Puccini. Apart from conducting, Köhler composed orchestral works, lieder, musicals, and an operetta titled *Alles Capriolen*, which he also used as the title of his autobiography published in 2003. He passed away in Wiesbaden at the age of 94.
Köhler was known for reviving lesser-known operas as well as premiering new works by contemporary composers like Volker David Kirchner. His recordings include major operas such as Richard Strauss's *Elektra*, reflecting his deep engagement with the German operatic tradition. His multifaceted career combined performance, education, and composition, making him a prominent figure in 20th-century classical music circles.
