Zdeněk Košler

Zdeněk Košler was an esteemed Czech conductor, renowned for his interpretations of Czech classical music as well as for conducting major works from the broader European repertoire. Born on March 25, 1928, in Prague, Košler made significant contributions to the world of music both in his home country and internationally. He studied at the Prague Conservatory and the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, later honing his conducting skills under the guidance of renowned maestros such as Karel Ančerl and Václav Talich.

Throughout his career, Košler served as the chief conductor of several orchestras, including the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Prague Symphony Orchestra. His wide-ranging musical proficiency is showcased in an array of recordings that span many classical genres and composers. Notably, his interpretations of Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll and Wesendonck-Lieder" and Mozart's "Requiem in D Minor" have been lauded for their emotional depth and technical precision. He has a rich discography that extends to the works of Schubert, Strauss, Brahms, and many others, with performances that have been described as both insightful and moving. Košler's legacy is one of a conductor who deeply understood the nuances of orchestral music, bringing to life the works of the great composers with clarity and passion. His death on July 2, 1995, marked the loss of one of Czech Republic’s most distinguished conductors.
