MOKOTRON

MOKOTRON is a Tāmaki-based Māori producer from Ngāti Hine, known for creating seismic waves of low-frequency indigenous electronic music. Born Tiopira McDowell, he combines elements of Māori culture with electronic sounds, often exploring themes of decolonization and urban disconnection. MOKOTRON's music is deeply rooted in his heritage, incorporating traditional instruments and storytelling. His recent projects include the remix album "The United Tribes of Bass" and singles like "Ōhākī," which utilizes the kōauau, a traditional Māori flute, and features throat singing over a breakbeat instrumental.

MOKOTRON's career has been marked by international releases and collaborations, including work with labels like Electro Records and appearances on compilations from Crazed Behaviour and Ovelha Tracks. Despite his growing international presence, he remains committed to his local community, focusing on creating music that resonates with his Māori roots. Outside of music, MOKOTRON is involved in teaching Māori history and culture, reflecting his deep connection to his community.
