Gabby Pahinui

Gabby Pahinui, known affectionately as "Pops" to many of his fans and fellow musicians, was a cornerstone in the world of Hawaiian music. Born Charles Kapono Kahahawai Jr. on April 22, 1921, in Honolulu, he grew to become an iconic figure, especially famed for his masterful slack-key guitar playing. Pahinui's early foray into music emerged from his upbringing in the Kaka'ako area of Honolulu, where he was surrounded by the sounds of Hawaiian culture. He dropped out of school to pursue music full-time by the age of 14 and honed his craft over the ensuing decades.

Gabby Pahinui's impact on Hawaiian music cannot be overstated, as he was instrumental in revitalizing and popularizing the slack-key guitar tradition, a uniquely Hawaiian style of playing that involves tuning the strings to form a chord. His heartfelt vocals, which captured the spirit of Hawaii, were matched by his virtuosity on the guitar, making him a beloved figure within the islands and beyond. Over the years, Pahinui's albums, such as "Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band, Vol. 1 & 2," "Pure Gabby," and the live recording "Rabbit Island Music Festival," have served as essential listening for those who cherish Hawaiian music and culture. His collaboration with The Sons of Hawaii and other prominent artists helped to usher in a renaissance of Hawaiian music during the 1970s. Pahinui's legacy endures through his recordings, his contributions to the growth of the genre, and the inspiration he continues to provide for Hawaiian musicians today. He passed away on October 13, 1980, but his music and influence continue to resonate throughout Hawaii and with slack-key guitar enthusiasts everywhere.
