The **Saint Ephraim Male Choir** was founded in 2002 by Tamás Bubnó, a renowned conductor and recipient of the Liszt Award and the Hungarian Artist of Merit in 2017. The choir is named after Saint Ephraim, a Syrian saint known for his spiritual hymns. Their mission is threefold: to promote Byzantine-rite Christian music, to nurture Hungarian musical literature for male choruses (including works by Liszt, Bartók, and Kodály), and to showcase contemporary choral pieces. The choir has achieved international success, performing at prestigious festivals like the Aldeburgh Festival in the UK, Fez Festival in Morocco, and numerous events in Europe and beyond. They have released several albums, including "Byzantine Mosaics," which won the Supersonic Award in 2010.
The choir's performances often blend traditional Byzantine music with Hungarian classics and contemporary compositions. They regularly participate in Hungary's most prestigious festivals and maintain a strong connection with the church through religious musical events. With a core group of eight seasoned singers, they host an annual concert series called "Orientale Lumen," featuring international guests and new compositions written specifically for them.
