Judy Singh

Judi Singh, sometimes spelled Judy Singh, was a Canadian jazz musician from Edmonton, Alberta. Born on May 9, 1945, she began her singing career at the age of 17 at the Yardbird Suite, a renowned jazz venue. Her early life was influenced by a diverse musical background, including gospel, blues, jazz, and Indian music. Her father, Sohan Singh Bhullar, was a Punjabi Sikh who immigrated to Canada in 1907, while her mother came from one of the earliest Black families in Alberta. Judi Singh's most notable work includes the album *A Time for Love*, recorded with Tommy Banks in 1970, which is highly regarded among collectors today. She also contributed vocals to Woody Shaw's albums *Rosewood* and *For Sure!*.

Throughout her career, Judi Singh performed extensively across western Canada, earning a devoted fanbase. Despite not achieving global fame, she remained dedicated to her craft. Her later years were spent living a private life in Victoria, BC, until her passing on July 18, 2021. While some of her recent releases might not be well-documented, her legacy as a celebrated jazz artist in Canada remains significant.
