Cong Josie

Cong Josie is the vibrant alter-ego and anagram of Nic Oogjes, the bandleader of the Melbourne-based heat beat band NO ZU. As Cong Josie, Nic dives into a wild, dreamlike world where 50s rock 'n' roll vibes meet pounding late-night electronics, creating a sound that blends nostalgic rockabilly with post-punk energy and dark humor. This persona allows him to explore the depths of his psyche, channeling a playful yet intense character who comes across as a snake-oil salesman, a sleazy singer, and a suburban hero all at once. His debut album *Cong!* (2021) showcases this unique fusion with gritty synths, lively saxophone, and a theatrical vocal style that ranges from croons to falsetto, capturing both fantasy and vulnerability in its storytelling.

On stage, Cong Josie is often joined by a talented band, including singers Cassandra Capri and Mona Rêves, who amplify the tension between romance and the darker edges of life. His single "Leather Whip," released in 2020, attracted notable attention internationally, especially on alternative and community radio. Nic’s Cong Josie project reflects his ongoing artistic evolution, marking a deliberate shift from his instrumental roles in NO ZU to front-and-center vocalist, embracing a persona that’s as much about performance and attitude as it is about the music itself.
