AfroCubism is a supergroup that was born from a beautiful idea that was almost 15 years late! The project was originally meant to bring Malian and Cuban musicians together in 1996, but it got postponed. Finally, in 2010, the dream became a reality when some of West Africa’s and Cuba’s finest instrumentalists and vocalists gathered in a Madrid studio. The resulting album and collaboration is a joyous fusion, blending the intricate guitar lines and vocals of Mali with the classic son and rhythmic foundations of Cuba.
The core of the band featured legendary Malian musicians like kora maestro Toumani Diabaté and guitarist Djelimady Tounkara alongside Cuban stars such as singer and laud player Eliades Ochoa of Buena Vista Social Club fame. Their self-titled album feels less like a forced fusion and more like a natural, long-lost conversation between two musical families who share deep historical roots. It’s a celebration of the shared rhythms and melodies that traveled across the Atlantic, reunited on record.
