Alexander Gibson

Sir Alexander Gibson was a celebrated Scottish conductor best known for his passionate interpretations of Romantic and 20th-century orchestral and operatic works. Born in 1926, he became a key figure in the Scottish classical music scene, notably as the founder and long-time music director of Scottish Opera. Gibson was also principal conductor of the Scottish National Orchestra (now the Royal Scottish National Orchestra) from 1959 to 1984, where he championed composers like Sibelius, Mahler, and Berlioz, helping to expand the orchestra’s international reputation.

Gibson was especially admired for his performances and recordings of Jean Sibelius's symphonies, and many of these recordings remain highly regarded by classical music enthusiasts. He brought a Nordic clarity and emotional depth to the Finnish composer’s works, earning a place among the most distinguished Sibelius interpreters. Knighted in 1977, Gibson left a lasting legacy in British classical music before his death in 1995.
