The Dictators

The Dictators stand as one of the seminal bands in the proto-punk and punk rock movement, originating from New York City in 1973. The group was formed by Andy Shernoff (bass, keyboards, vocals), Ross "The Boss" Friedman (guitar), Scott "Top Ten" Kempner (guitar), Stu Boy King (drums), and Richard "Handsome Dick" Manitoba (lead vocals). Their style merged the raw power of punk with a sly sense of humor, rock-and-roll sensibilities, and an irreverent attitude, setting the stage for many punk bands that would follow. Notably, they were one of the first bands to play the style of music that would later be dubbed "punk", releasing their influential debut album "Go Girl Crazy!" in 1975, which was full of brash anthems and comic book imagery.

Throughout their career, The Dictators faced ups and downs, breaking up and reuniting several times, with various line-up changes along the way. They maintained a cult following with albums like "Manifest Destiny" (1977) and "Bloodbrothers" (1978). Their music continued to resonate with fans, exemplified by the 40th Anniversary Edition of "Go Girl Crazy!" and new music, including releases like "D.F.F.D." in 2001. Known for their humorous lyrics and energetic live performances, The Dictators have earned their place as punk rock pioneers, influencing a generation of musicians while retaining their authentic, gritty New York sound, as celebrated in later offerings such as "Every Day Is Saturday" and the wittily titled "Thank You And Have A Nice Day."
