Antonio Paoli

**Antonio Paoli** (1871–1971) was a Puerto Rican operatic tenor who earned international fame as one of the early 20th century’s most celebrated voices. Born in Ponce, he trained in Europe and became known as the “Tenor of Kings and King of Tenors” for his powerful performances in iconic roles like Canio in *Pagliacci* and the title role in *Otello*. His rich, dramatic voice and stage presence made him a standout in opera houses across Europe and the Americas, while his groundbreaking 1907 recordings of full operas (a rarity at the time) helped preserve his legacy as a pioneer of the recording era.

Beyond his artistic achievements, Paoli was a proud advocate for Puerto Rican culture and independence, even funding revolutionary efforts through his performances. Though his career faced setbacks due to World War I and shifting musical tastes, his recordings, like those featured in *Il mito dell’opera*, keep his legendary voice alive. Today, he’s remembered as a trailblazer who put Puerto Rico on the global opera map. 🎤✨
