t.A.T.u. is a Russian music duo that soared to international acclaim in the early 2000s with their hit "All The Things She Said," a song that became emblematic of their provocative image and catchy, synth-driven pop sound. Comprised of vocalists Lena Katina and Julia Volkova, t.A.T.u. was formed in Moscow in 1999 by producer Ivan Shapovalov. The duo initially garnered attention not just for their music, but also for their controversial presentation as a lesbian couple, which later was revealed to be a marketing strategy rather than a reflection of their personal lives.
Despite the controversies, t.A.T.u.'s music resonated with a wide swath of fans worldwide, especially with their debut English-language album "200 km/h in the Wrong Lane" which included the aforementioned hit as well as their cover of The Smiths' "How Soon Is Now?". Following their early successes, the group continued to release music with albums like "Waste Management" and its accompanying remix collections, demonstrating their ability to evolve with electro-pop trends. Though their follow-ups, such as "Snowfalls" and "Happy Smiles," were less commercially impactful, the group fostered a dedicated fanbase. Over time, t.A.T.u. has faced split rumors and have indeed taken breaks, but their music has left a lasting impression on the pop landscape of the 2000s.
