Mestre Barrão

Mestre Barrão, born Marcos da Silva in 1961, is a renowned Brazilian capoeira master and founder of Grupo Axé Capoeira. He began his capoeira journey in Recife, studying under Mestre Pirajá and later Mestre Teté. In 1982, he became the Brazilian Champion in capoeira, which led to numerous teaching opportunities. Mestre Barrão is credited with introducing capoeira to Canada and has since expanded Grupo Axé Capoeira globally, with schools in over 20 countries. He is celebrated for his contributions to capoeira and has been recognized as one of the most influential capoeiristas of the century.

As a musician, Mestre Barrão has released several albums of capoeira music, including collaborations with other notable figures like Mestre Burguês. His music is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of Brazil, reflecting his dedication to preserving and promoting capoeira's rich heritage.
