Coull Quartet

The Coull Quartet is an English string quartet formed in 1974 by students at the Royal Academy of Music in London under the guidance of renowned quartet leader Sidney Griller. The quartet consists of Roger Coull and Philip Gallaway on violins, Jonathan Barritt on viola, and Nicholas Roberts on cello. They quickly gained national recognition and were appointed Quartet-in-Residence by the University of Warwick in 1977, a position they held for over forty years. The ensemble has performed extensively throughout the UK and has toured Western Europe, the Americas, Australia, China, India, and the Far East.

The Coull Quartet has made over 30 recordings, featuring a diverse repertoire from classic Mendelssohn and Schubert quartets to contemporary British chamber music. Their recordings have received critical acclaim, including a CD of quartets by Maw and Britten that was hailed as a "Benchmark Recording" by BBC Music Magazine. The quartet is also known for premiering works by British composers and for their unique list of commissions, which includes pieces involving string quartets, quintets, solo voices, choirs, and even table tennis players. Recent releases include "On This Shining Night," "Treasures from the New World," and "Joe Cutler: Ping (Live)" among others.
