John Storgårds

John Storgårds is a renowned Finnish conductor and violin virtuoso, celebrated for his dual career in music. He is currently the Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa. Additionally, he serves as the Artistic Director of the Lapland Chamber Orchestra and will become the Chief Conductor of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra starting in the 2024-2025 season. Storgårds is widely recognized for his creative flair in programming and his refined performances. He has worked with numerous prestigious orchestras globally, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Munich Philharmonic, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. His award-winning discography includes notable recordings of works by Sibelius, Nielsen, and George Antheil, among others.

Storgårds' musical journey began with violin studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he later returned to study conducting under Jorma Panula and Eri Klas. He has received several prestigious awards, including the Finnish State Prize for Music in 2002 and the Pro Finlandia Prize in 2012. His recent releases reflect his diverse musical interests, featuring works by composers such as Kalevi Aho, Shostakovich, and Per Nørgård.
