Alessandro Rolla (1757–1841) was an Italian composer, violinist, and violist who played a key role in the development of string music during the Classical and early Romantic periods. Known for his virtuosic skills, Rolla was a prominent figure in the musical scene of his time, serving as conductor of La Scala in Milan and influencing the next generation of musicians, including a young Niccolò Paganini. His compositions, particularly for viola, showcase his deep understanding of string technique and musical expression, with works ranging from concertos and chamber pieces to duets and symphonies. While he isn't as widely recognized today as some of his contemporaries, his contributions remain significant, particularly in advancing viola repertoire and orchestral conducting.
