**Sly Dunbar** is a legendary Jamaican drummer and producer who’s been laying down iconic reggae and dancehall grooves since the 1970s. Born Lowell Fillmore Dunbar in Kingston, Jamaica, he earned the nickname “Sly” for his admiration of Sly Stone and went on to become half of the groundbreaking production duo **Sly & Robbie** (with bassist Robbie Shakespeare). Together, they’ve shaped the sound of reggae, working with everyone from Bob Dylan and Grace Jones to Black Uhuru and Peter Tosh. Sly’s signature “rockers” drumming style—tight, punchy, and impossibly funky—helped define modern reggae rhythms and influenced genres from hip-hop to electronic music.
Even decades into his career, Sly stays busy. Recent releases like *Roots Reggae Vibration*, *Dub Ballistic*, and *Justice* show he’s still a force in the studio, blending classic vibes with fresh energy.
