Willi Domgraf-Fassbaender was a celebrated German baritone, particularly known for his interpretations of opera and lieder. Born in Aachen in 1912, he studied music in Berlin and made his debut in 1937 at the Städtische Oper Berlin. He quickly gained recognition for his rich voice, elegant phrasing, and compelling stage presence. Domgraf-Fassbaender was a mainstay at major opera houses throughout his career, including the Vienna State Opera and the Bavarian State Opera. He was especially admired for his Mozart roles, such as Papageno in *The Magic Flute* and Count Almaviva in *The Marriage of Figaro*, but his repertoire also encompassed works by Strauss, Wagner, and Verdi.
Beyond his operatic achievements, Domgraf-Fassbaender was a dedicated recitalist and champion of art song. He made numerous recordings, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to be appreciated by music lovers. His daughter, Brigitte Fassbaender, followed in his footsteps, becoming a renowned mezzo-soprano. Willi Domgraf-Fassbaender passed away in Nuremberg in 1978.
