Jürgen Jürgens

Jürgen Jürgens was a renowned German choral conductor and academic teacher, born on October 5, 1925, in Frankfurt am Main. He received his musical training at the Musisches Gymnasium Frankfurt under Kurt Thomas and later studied with Konrad Lechner at the Musikhochschule Freiburg. In 1955, Jürgens founded the Monteverdi-Chor Hamburg, which became a pioneering ensemble for the music of Claudio Monteverdi. He was particularly noted for his work on Monteverdi's "Vespro della Beata Vergine" and collaborated closely with musicians like Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt. Jürgens also held positions at the University of Hamburg, serving as University Music Director from 1961 to 1993 and as a professor starting in 1973.

Jürgens' contributions to early music were significant, and he recorded numerous works by Monteverdi, Heinrich Schütz, and Johann Sebastian Bach. His ensemble participated in the Telefunken/Teldec Bach cantatas project, showcasing his versatility beyond Monteverdi's repertoire. He passed away on August 4, 1994, in Hamburg, leaving behind a legacy as a promoter of Baroque music.
