Leonel Power

Leonel Power was an important English composer during the early Renaissance, active in the first half of the 15th century. He’s best known for his contributions to the development of English polyphony and was a leading figure associated with the Old Hall Manuscript—a key source of English sacred music from that time. Much of Power’s surviving work is liturgical, including Mass movements, motets, and antiphons. He was a contemporary of John Dunstaple and helped shape the distinctive style that influenced continental composers as well, often referred to as the “Contenance Angloise” (English manner).

Power spent part of his career associated with Canterbury Cathedral and the royal chapel, indicating he was a respected and prominent figure in ecclesiastical music circles. His music is notable for its melodic expressiveness and harmonic clarity, marking a shift away from the more austere medieval style toward the richer textures that define Renaissance music. Though much about his life remains a mystery, his legacy continues to be celebrated in early music circles today.
