Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino (CGS) has distinguished itself as one of the foremost traditional music ensembles in Italy and is a leading force in the revival and promotion of Puglia's pizzica tarantata music and dance tradition. Formed in 1975 by the writer Rina Durante, CGS is a multi-generational collective that emerged from the Salento region in the southern part of the Italian peninsula (the "heel" of Italy's "boot").
CGS has experienced an ever-evolving lineup, with the leadership passing to the charismatic fiddler and drummer Mauro Durante in 2007, following the footsteps of his father, Daniele Durante, who led the group for many years. Infusing traditional beats and instruments like the tamburello (frame drum), accordion, and violin with contemporary sounds, CGS has garnered international acclaim for their soulful and energetic performances. Albums such as "Meridiana," the evocative "Canzoniere," and the lively "Pizzica indiavolata" showcase their ability to connect age-old traditions with modern sensibilities. Through their work, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino continues to showcase the power of traditional music, bringing a vibrant slice of Southern Italian culture to the global stage.
