Alan Kushan is an internationally recognized Persian avant-garde musician, known for his mastery of the santur. Born in Mahabad, Kurdistan, Iran in 1960, he has developed a unique style that blends traditional Persian music with elements of Western classical, jazz, and world music. Kushan is not only a skilled performer but also an instrument maker, having modified his santur to incorporate elements from the piano, harp, and guitar, creating a distinctive sound. He has collaborated with notable musicians such as Miles Davis and Paco de Lucia, and has traveled extensively, drawing inspiration from various global cultures.
Kushan's work extends beyond music; he is also a composer, singer, actor, and poet. His performances often reflect an avant-garde approach, incorporating elements of surrealism and what he terms "essential encounters," a method of creative expression that involves cultivating a dream-like state while maintaining a level of awareness. Currently residing in New York City, Kushan continues to innovate and experiment in the music world.
