Glenn Miller

Alton Glenn Miller was an iconic American big band trombonist, arranger, composer, and bandleader in the swing era. Born on March 1, 1904, in Clarinda, Iowa, Miller became synonymous with the sound of the 1930s and 40s swing music movement. He started his music career after dropping out of college to become a professional musician, eventually forming his own band in 1938. The Glenn Miller Orchestra found fame with a string of hits including "Moonlight Serenade," "In the Mood," and "Chattanooga Choo Choo."

Miller's unique sound was a result of his careful attention to the musical arrangements, often crafting compositions that favored a clarinet lead with a tenor saxophone harmonizing in the same range, creating a distinctive, full sound that was both melodic and rhythmic. At the height of his career, he joined the war effort, entertaining troops as a part of the Army Air Force band. Tragically, his life was cut short at the age of 40 when his plane disappeared over the English Channel in 1944 during World War II, but his legacy endures through his timeless recordings and influence on the big band genre. The releases listed, including compilations like "The Swing Band Project, Vol. 3: Glenn Miller in Studio, on Air and on Stage" and remastered tracks like "Rhapsody in Blue," ensure that new and old generations can experience the magic of Miller's music with crisp, revitalized sound quality.
