T. Brinda

T. Brinda, affectionately known as Brindamma, was a legendary Carnatic vocalist born on November 5, 1912, into a family deeply rooted in music. She was the granddaughter of the eminent Veena Dhanammal and was trained initially by her mother Kamakshi Ammal in the distinctive Dhanammal style, noted for its slow, intricate gamakas and alluring movements. Brinda further refined her skills under the guidance of Kanchipuram Naina Pillai, whose style was more vigorous and rhythmically agile, and also learned from her aunt Lakshmiratnam. This unique blend of styles gave her singing a rare depth and nuanced agility.

Brinda was renowned for her mastery over ragas with complex patterns and subtle embellishments, such as Begada, Mukhari, and Sahana. She was also a treasured repository of rare compositions, including padams, javalis, and kritis by the great Trinity of Carnatic music, often performing pieces scarcely heard anywhere else. Her work has been highly admired by peers and connoisseurs alike for its scholarly richness and emotive power. Her legacy remains influential in Carnatic music circles even today.
