Cheng Zhang is a pianist known for his deep insight into the music he interprets. He gained international recognition in 2011 by winning both the Haskil Prize and the public prize at the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition. Born in China, Cheng made his U.S. debut at sixteen with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, performing Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 in 2006. He has collaborated with numerous ensembles worldwide, including Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Musikkollegium Winterthur, and has performed under renowned conductors like Jesús López Cobos and Kazuki Yamada. Cheng has also garnered acclaim for his recitals at prestigious venues such as Konzerthaus in Berlin and Gewandhaus in Leipzig.
In recent years, Cheng has established himself as a distinguished interpreter of Robert Schumann's works, notably performing all three Schumann Piano Sonatas at the Leipzig Gewandhaus in 2017. His recordings include an all-Schumann album released in 2019 and a Bartók album in 2020, both receiving critical acclaim. Cheng studied with Klaus Hellwig at the Universität der Künste Berlin and holds a degree from TCU School of Music under Tamás Ungár.
