A founding member of the gritty alt-country group National Dust and later the garage-rock outfit The Von Zippers, Matheson carved out a reputation for raw, emotionally charged songwriting. His solo work blends wry lyricism with ragged Americana and lo-fi charm, showcased in releases like *The Night Is for Sleepers* and *Rebels United*.
