Kortatu

Kortatu was a seminal Ska-Punk band from the Basque Country that left a notable mark on the music scene in Spain in the 1980s. Formed in Irun in 1984 by brothers Fermin and Iñigo Muguruza, along with drummer Treku Armendariz, the band was heavily influenced by British punk and the burgeoning ska revival, but with a unique twist that infused their music with elements of traditional Basque culture. Their music often held a strong political message, reflecting their stance on issues such as Basque nationalism, social justice, and anti-fascism, which resonated with the socio-political climate of Spain during those times.

During their brief but intense career that lasted until 1988, Kortatu became icons of the 'Rock Radikal Vasco' movement, producing several influential records such as their self-titled debut "Kortatu," "El Estado De Las Cosas," and the energetic "Kolpez Kolpe." Their final album, "Azken Guda Dantza," served as a powerful farewell, capturing the intensity and spirit of their live performances. Although the band dissolved in the late '80s, they left behind a legacy that continued to inspire and pave the way for future generations of musicians. "A Frontline Compilation" and "Aizkolari" are among the collections that exhibit the band’s revolutionary energy and commitment to their cultural and political roots. Kortatu’s music remains influential and continues to be discovered by new audiences, maintaining their status as a cornerstone of Basque and Spanish rock history.
