Preoccupations is a Canadian post-punk band originally formed in Calgary, Alberta, in 2012. Initially known by the name Viet Cong, the band consists of members Matt Flegel on vocals and bass, Scott Munro on guitar and synth, Daniel Christiansen on guitar, and Mike Wallace on drums. The group gained recognition with their self-titled release under Viet Cong in 2015, which showcased their penchant for dark, intense rhythms coupled with brooding lyrical themes. However, controversy surrounding their name led to a considered rebranding, and in 2016, they emerged as Preoccupations.
With a fresh name and a continued commitment to their signature intense sound, Preoccupations released their second self-titled album in 2016. This album, along with subsequent releases such as "New Material" in 2018, saw the band further refine their blend of sharp post-punk and ambient textures. Their works, like "Espionage," "Antidote," and "Anxiety," delve into the complexities of the human psyche, with sonic landscapes that are as immersive as they are challenging. Over the years, Preoccupations have carved out a unique niche for themselves, garnering a dedicated following with their thoughtful explorations of dissonance both in sound and the human condition.
