The Swell Season is an indie folk duo formed by Irish musician Glen Hansard and Czech singer and pianist Markéta Irglová. Their collaboration began when Hansard, already known as the frontman for the Irish rock band The Frames, met Irglová, a classically trained musician, in the Czech Republic. Together, they gained international acclaim with their roles in the 2007 film "Once," which featured their Oscar-winning song "Falling Slowly." Building on this success, The Swell Season released their self-titled album in the same year, capturing the raw, emotional authenticity that would become a hallmark of their sound.
Following their initial rise to fame, The Swell Season's 2009 release, "Strict Joy," further cemented their reputation, showcasing their evolution as musicians and storytellers. The album, which was subsequently reissued as a deluxe edition, offered a rich tapestry of melancholic melodies and heartfelt lyrics, reflecting on themes of love, loss, and redemption. Despite the duo's professional separation in the early 2010s, "Strict Joy" remained a testament to their unique musical chemistry and the profound impact they've had on indie folk music. Their music continues to resonate with fans, as evidenced by the lasting popularity of tracks such as "The Answer Is Yes," a poignant piece woven with the intimate, acoustic-driven aesthetic that defines The Swell Season's enduring legacy.
