The Donnas

Formed in Palo Alto, California, in the mid-'90s, The Donnas burst onto the music scene with a blend of rock 'n' roll, punk, and garage band sensibilities that hearkened back to the raw energy of the 1970s rock era. The band, comprised of Brett Anderson (vocals), Allison Robertson (guitar, backing vocals), Maya Ford (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Torry Castellano (drums, percussion, backing vocals), initially adopted pseudonyms based on the first name "Donna" followed by their first initials, hence becoming Donna A., Donna R., Donna F., and Donna C., respectively. This was a nod to the Ramones, another group that influence their music style. Over the years, they ditched the pseudonyms but retained their fiery spirit.

The Donnas gained notoriety by delivering energetic live performances and a series of albums that captured the essence of their youthful, rebellious spirit. Albums like "American Teenage Rock 'n' Roll Machine" and "Get Skintight" solidified their place in the rock genre, blending catchy hooks with tough, gritty instrumentation. Their music evolved over the years, with albums like "Spend the Night" and "Gold Medal" showcasing more polished production and nuanced songwriting while retaining the band's signature edge. Notable for hits such as "Take it Off" and "Fall Behind Me," The Donnas have earned a loyal fanbase and critical acclaim, contributing significantly to the 2000s rock landscape and advocating for female empowerment in the rock music scene.
