GING NANG BOYZ
GING NANG BOYZ are a Japanese punk rock trio known for their frenetic energy, irreverent lyrics, and DIY spirit. Formed in the late '90s by vocalist/guitarist Shutoku Mukai (also of indie legends Number Girl), bassist Hiroto Kato, and drummer Futoshi Abe, they became cult favorites in Japan’s underground scene with their raw, scrappy sound blending punk, garage rock, and absurdist humor. Their songs often flip between shout-along chaos and unexpectedly melodic moments, with Mukai’s yelpy vocals delivering lyrics that tackle everything from existential dread to playful nonsense.
After a mid-2000s hiatus, the band regrouped in the 2010s, reigniting their signature chaos with releases like *Blew Blue* and *GOD SAVE THE わーるど*. Recent tracks like the bittersweet *生きたい* ("I Want to Live") and *光のなかに立っていてね* ("Stand in the Light") show their knack for pairing scrappy riffs with oddly poignant themes. Known for wild live shows and a steadfast refusal to "grow up," GING NANG BOYZ remain beloved weirdos of Japanese indie rock.
