Weird Nightmare

Weird Nightmare is the solo project of Alex Edkins, the vocalist and guitarist for the Canadian punk band METZ. Launched in 2022, Weird Nightmare showcases a different side of Edkins’ artistry, blending raw punk energy with catchy hooks and melodic indie rock. The project features a fuzzy, scuzzy sound with a playful, fun spirit that contrasts with the more intense and technical style of METZ. Drawing inspiration from guitar-driven music across decades, Weird Nightmare incorporates elements of power pop, surf rock, and shoegaze while maintaining an abrasive edge reminiscent of Edkins’ punk roots. His debut self-titled album and its follow-up singles highlight a blend of distortion-heavy sound with tuneful melodies and a fresh, vibrant approach to songwriting.

During the pandemic, Edkins finally had the time to develop and finish these solo songs, recording much of the material himself while exploring immediate, catchy music with fuzzy textures. Tracks like "Lusitania" showcase Britpop influences, while "Sunday Driver" pays homage to shoegaze legends. The project is notable for its warm, fuzzed-up production and a sense of creative freedom, reflecting Edkins’ desire to have fun and craft music that felt natural and spontaneous. Weird Nightmare presents a fun, melodic yet gritty take on indie rock that resonates with fans of both punk and more melodic guitar music.
