Sultan Khan

Sultan Khan was an internationally acclaimed Indian sarangi virtuoso and vocalist, widely celebrated for his contribution to classical Indian music. Born in 1940 in Rajasthan, he hailed from a family of musicians and spent much of his life mastering and promoting the sarangi—a bowed string instrument known for its rich, emotive sound. Khan was a prominent performer of Hindustani classical music and became known for his collaborations with both Indian and Western artists, bridging musical traditions with elegance and depth.

Throughout his career, Sultan Khan performed at major music festivals around the world and was a longtime member of the fusion group Tabla Beat Science alongside artists like Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell. His distinctive style and soulful playing brought renewed global attention to the sarangi. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors. His recordings, such as "The Legend of Sarangi," showcase his virtuosic skill and deep sensitivity as a musician. His legacy continues to inspire sarangi players and music lovers around the world.
