O.V. Wright

O.V. Wright was a powerhouse in the Southern soul and deep soul scenes, known for his emotionally charged vocals and raw, gospel-infused delivery. Born Overton Vertis Wright in 1939 in Tennessee, he first made his mark singing in gospel groups before transitioning to secular music in the early 1960s. His big break came with the song "You're Gonna Make Me Cry," and he became best known for soul classics like "That's How Strong My Love Is" and "A Nickel and a Nail." His work with Memphis-based labels like Back Beat and later Hi Records showcased his deep, heartfelt voice amid lush arrangements and gritty grooves.

Wright's music was marked by deep emotional resonance, and he was a key influence on future soul and blues singers. Despite facing personal struggles, including time in prison during the 1970s, he remained a revered figure for his powerful vocal artistry. O.V. Wright passed away in 1980, but his recordings have continued to resonate, with many soul aficionados and musicians praising his contributions to the genre.
