The Whitlams

The Whitlams are a celebrated Australian indie rock band with a rich history dating back to their formation in Sydney in 1992. Named after the former Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, the group was founded by songwriter and pianist Tim Freedman, alongside bassist Andy Lewis and guitarist Stevie Plunder. Their music has been defined by Freedman's clever lyricism and piano-driven compositions, touching upon themes of love, loss, and the sociopolitical climate of Australia. Their discography is distinguished by a tapestry of sounds, from pop and rock to orchestral arrangements.

The group's success was marked by their breakthrough third album, "Eternal Nightcap," released in 1997, which won them multiple ARIA Awards. This album featured one of their most iconic songs "No Aphrodisiac," securing The Whitlams a place in the core of Australia's musical heart. Although the band has seen various lineup changes over the years, Freedman has remained the constant driving force, anchoring The Whitlams' presence in the music scene. Over the decades, the band's resilience and evolution have allowed them to maintain a devoted fan base, as evidenced by their compelling live performances and a robust catalogue that includes recent releases like "Sancho" and the reflective "(You're Making Me Feel Like I'm) 50 Again." Even as they continue to pay homage to their roots, The Whitlams' ongoing creativity continues to engage listeners both old and new.
