Zabranjeno pušenje is a prominent rock band that emerged from the former Yugoslavia, gaining widespread recognition during the 1980s as part of the New Primitives movement. Hailing from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the band was formed in 1980 by a group of friends who were inspired by punk rock, new wave, and the unique cultural atmosphere of their city. Known for their satirical lyrics and a style that fused rock with local folk influences, they quickly captured the hearts and minds of a generation.
Their debut album "Das ist Walter" set the tone for their rebellious and unabashedly Sarajevan sound, and they followed this with a series of successful albums throughout the 80s, much to the delight of fans across Yugoslavia. However, the outbreak of the Bosnian War forced some members to emigrate, causing a split that led to the formation of two factions of the band, one based in Belgrade, Serbia, led by founding member Sejo Sexon, and the other in Zagreb, Croatia. Despite the turbulence of their early years, Zabranjeno pušenje has endured, consistently releasing albums and maintaining a strong fanbase with recent works like "Muzej revolucije" and "Šok I Nevjerica". They have also captured their energetic live performances in recordings such as "Live in Skenderija Sarajevo 2018" and "Live in St. Louis", showcasing their enduring appeal and the timeless quality of their music.
