Sir Victor Uwaifo

Sir Victor Uwaifo (1 March 1941 – 28 August 2021) was a Nigerian musician, writer, sculptor, and musical instrument inventor, recognized by his distinctive style and pioneering contributions to the Highlife, Ekassa, and Akwete music genres. He was also renowned for his stage performances and showmanship which set him apart in the era of his prime as a true entertainer. Uwaifo was not just a musician but a legend in the African music scene; he became the first professional musician in Nigeria to be awarded the National Merit Honours of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) and was later knighted as Sir Victor Uwaifo.

Over the course of his illustrious career, Sir Victor Uwaifo made significant impacts on the sounds and rhythms of Highlife. His guitar works were particularly notable, characterized by a unique blend of West African rhythms with modern musical instruments.
