Pussy Riot is a Russian feminist protest punk rock and performance art group based in Moscow. Founded in August 2011, the group is known for staging unauthorized, provocative guerrilla performances in unusual public locations, which are transformed into music videos and posted on the Internet. The collective's lyrical themes include feminism, LGBT rights, opposition to Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom they view as a dictator, and his policies.
Garnering international attention in early 2012 following their arrest for a performance in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, three members of the group were imprisoned on charges of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred." This incident brought Pussy Riot global fame and turned them into symbol of resistance against state authoritarianism and for free speech. Despite various members coming and going—and some serving time in prison—the group has continued to release new music and art that criticizes and challenges the socio-political climate in Russia. Their most recent releases, including "We Love You Moar," "Chastity Remixes," "WHY," and "MATRIARCHY NOW," maintain their trademark fusion of provocative art with activism and a punk rock ethos, always aiming to provoke thought and challenge the status quo.
